RECOMENDATION: The Lost Fleet: Jack Campbell

By: Noah Douglas

Do you love expansive military science fiction that has non-stop action and interpersonal drama? I suggest that you check out THE LOST FLEET series by Jack Campbell. This is the series that actually got me in to writing military science fiction.

It's worth checking out if you haven't already! I give it 5/5 stars.

"The Alliance has been fighting the Syndics for a century—and losing badly. Now its fleet is crippled and stranded in enemy territory. Their only hope is a man who's emerged from a century-long hibernation to find he has been heroically idealized beyond belief....

Captain John “Black Jack” Geary’s exploits are known to every schoolchild. Revered for his heroic “last stand” in the early days of the war, he was presumed dead. But a century later, Geary miraculously returns and reluctantly takes command of the Alliance Fleet as it faces annihilation by the Syndics.

Appalled by the hero-worship around him, Geary is nevertheless a man who will do his duty. And he knows that bringing the stolen Syndic hypernet key safely home is the Alliance’s one chance to win the war. But to do that, Geary will have to live up to the impossibly heroic “Black Jack” legend...."

Why I Recommend

Whether you're new to military science fiction or already an avid reader of the genre, Jack Campbell makes Captain Geary's story beyond engaging with fleet engagements and tension that will keep you on the edge of your seat. It isn't a hard series to read by any means and really, I think it could be recommended for anyone 8 years and older. However, looking back on this series as a 21-year-old, I still think it is brilliant and worth the read. If it isn't something you might be interested in, but you want your kids to read something engaging, have them try this series and they might come to love it. There are a number of great series that branch off of this one, so be sure to check them all out!
